China's commerce minister has thanked foreign companies for donating earthquake aid, rejecting criticism spread on a few Chinese Web sites that they are failing to do enough.

Minister Chen Deming says China has gotten "strong support" from foreign companies and international agencies following the May 12 quake, which killed tens of thousands of people.

Chen said at a news conference Thursday that foreign companies have given 1.95 billion yuan, or about $280 million, in cash and supplies.

He rejected comments posted on Chinese Web sites that called foreign companies "international misers" and accused them of failing to give quake aid.

The private sector never comes up short during disasters and that's the rule rather than the exception.

Yet there you are on another thread criticising Buffett and Gates. I dunno about your one inch grinder, but I'd reckon you have a one cell brain!
By the way, well done to all of the foreign companies and individuals who've donated to this tragedy. It goes to show that compassion need have no boundary or nationality!

Perhaps China will now learn to allow foreign assistance from the beginning.

Seneca,

I've actually been very surprised by the chorus of "you're not doing enough" from a country that has spent the last four years spending billions of dollars building Olympic doodads and using foreign exchange reserves to keep a peg in place.

And now we see China and the world's generosity being misappropriated.

A report on SBS news Australia, (quoting and replaying segments from CCTV news broadcasts) mentions while Korean aid & Japanese medical personnel are doing their bit to help Chinese victims of the quake, a Chinese Army Official gave aid supplies, meant for earthquake victims in Sichuan, to a local store which is owned by his girfriend's family. Fortunately this fellow, Wang Ya-Dong, has been arrested, but this is really despicable behaviour.
How much more of this greed is preventing supplies getting through to the needy ?
