BOAO: Economic and trade exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan face a historic opportunity, Hu Jintao, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said at the Boao Forum for Asia.

Hu made the remarks on Saturday while meeting with Vincent Siew, chairman of the Taiwan-based Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, a non-profit group that works to improve economic collaboration between Taiwan and the mainland.

Hu said the mainland would continue promoting cross-Straits economic and cultural exchanges; make efforts to push forward negotiations on weekend charter flights and mainland tourists' travel to Taiwan; and step up efforts to restore cross-Straits negotiations.

He said cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation had achieved great progress after 20 years of development but pointed out that in the last eight years, relations "suffered twists and turns for reasons known to all", and people on both sides were not willing to see that.

He stressed that the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations was the shared will and common interests of compatriots on both sides.

Hu said the fact that the forum attracted so many participants from both home and abroad reflects Asian countries' and regions' strong desire to reinforce communication and cooperation and seek win-win solutions.

"The fact also inspired us to think deep about cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation under the new circumstances," Hu said.

Siew said the economies of the mainland and Taiwan are closely related, and the development of trade and economic relations had contributed to cross-Straits stability.

He hoped weekend charter flights would be launched as early as possible and mainland tourists soon travel to Taiwan.

At a roundtable yesterday, Siew introduced to Minister of Commerce Chen Deming 12 major infrastructure projects on the island which will be open to investment from the mainland. The projects, with a total investment of 250 billion yuan, are expected to give a boost to Taiwan's economy.

"Our enterprises are keen to invest in Taiwan and participate in the projects," said Chen. "We hope Taiwan opens up to mainland investment and products as we have done over the years."

Mainland enterprises are currently not allowed to establish operations in Taiwan, nor can their products be sold.

"As long as it's in the interest of Taiwan people and will not impact on the island's enterprises, we can select mainland products to be sold in Taiwan," Chen said.

"The economies of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan are complementary to each other. Once our industries integrate, the potential will be enormous," said Morris Chang, chairman of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation.

Chang is among Taiwan executives who attended the forum yesterday, and his company is one of the world's largest semiconductor makers, which has a manufacturing facility in Shanghai.

The winning of Guomingdang in the local chief election is generally a good news to the mainland ,which at leat can delay the war for another four years as Mao has promised not to promote any program to join the UN. Closer economic ties will be established across the straights that will benefit people on both sides but mostly in Taiwan. Given the fact that Guomingdang sticks to one-China policy, the Chinese people have a lot higher expectations of the cross-straights relations. However, we can not be too optimistic. It's not realistic to count on an American educated Ma ,let alone he has American green card. He has not began to rule and we are still not able to observe what kind of policy his government will take. In a word ,he is still under watch.
Let me say the best scenario is that he does a lot of work to promote cross straights relations ,but never talk about reunification and the worst one is that he publicly works as a running dog of his master:US government and threatens to declare independence. Whatever, we work on our preparations!

There should be more inter-people exchanges.  More Chinese from the island should visit China even as the island prepares itself for an influx of tourists from their motherland.  It will be as happy a reunion as the people on the province wants it to be - which means they must not cheat their fellow brothers and sisters. We should keep an eye on prices at Sun Moon Lake, for instance.

The inter-people exchanges should include students; although at present there are already a number of students from the island studying in the universities in their motherland, this number should be increased.  One day, students from the mainland could also study on the island.

The exchanges need not be limited to people. They could also be about cultural artifacts.  There is a big jade cabbage in the museum on the island. Together with the other cultural exhibits which were originally made by mother China, they should be put on a road show to exhibit in selected museums on the mainland, so that those who cannot afford to travel to the island can also be reunited to the common bond now being tied back again from the spliced knots that had been unfortunately broken by events in history.

After all, the events that flow in history are like the big river which must have a source and a destiny.

That the island has already concluded it would be the services sector which will compensate for the downturn in their manufacturing sector is speaking reality. Manufacturing big and small should relocate to the motherland where many already are making good money for their owners. But these owners, old and new ones to come, should see that the people they employ in their plants on the motherland are no different than the people they would employ on the island. They are also Chinese, family members, even if considered on extended scale. All come from the same common root.  And thus must be properly taken care of, not exploited. By relocating more plants to the mainland because it makes economic and strategic sense for the survival of their investment in the next twenty years, the island will then have to find a new economic/business model for its future in cooperation with investors from the mainland and coordinated with the other mega-hubs in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau and Hainan.  How about as China's Asia-Pacific trade facilitating center for the pacific rim of the Americas which can include a new shipbuilding yard?  At present, this is just a small idea waiting to be elaborated further but i am thinking of a Chinese version of something further north.

It remains to be said, and in fact what is going to be written next is actually the reason for this post, another one of my lilting ones.

China has shown immense consideration and bent backwards for a giant to a small island which has historically been its province, even to one which had taken to shed blood not only of those not of the ideology of its political leaders, but also those of its own charges.  Therefore it' should not be about negotiation, a western invention. It should be about good form, statesmanship, sincerity, Chineseness.  If one is really Chinese in root and fiber, presidents meet presidents. The motherland has shown all of these. Should one expect any less from anywhere else?

This is not a game. It's not a zero-sum smart play. It's not a bazaar more for me less for you. it's not about trying to play one against the others or about not ruffling the sensitivities of past alliances. After all, it has already been etched there is but One China so the time to score personal bunny points in order to try and look good before a shrinking crowd of cronies is long gone.

It's all about the long-awaited reunion of an entire nation.

... but the idea of having a travelling exhibit to the Asian Rim/Europe/North America of the items at the Tai pei Muesum has been repeatedly put on hold when the local P.R.C. consulates started writing the local, state, and federal governments to "recover the stolen items".
