In some cases, one phrase or the other is almost always used.
live on a particular street (that's where your home is).
*live in a particular street - not correct, it would mean you live in the center of the street.
...

Jeff,

In British English, "in" is always used in this connection.
An example:
He lives in Cherrywood Street.

Jeff, your answer is helpful.

Well, people write entire books on "spatial prepositions." Here's a little chart showing the different uses of the prepositions on and in in their physical, most concrete sense. ON-IN scale.png

And there are uses for those prepositions that are a little less "concrete": in a car, on a plane, on a train, on a motorcycle (for passengers).

And still others: is software "on" your computer or "in" your computer? (I think "on" usually.)

edward_lee: Thank you so much for that post! I apologize for my US-centric answer. I had a very vague notion that US and British spelling might differ in that instance but got carried away with my response and (carelessly) did not check it. I appreciate your clarification! :)

Just goes to show you, rainbow. it's sometimes difficult for even native speakers!
