我觉得9楼的翻译的不错,楼上的翻译忠于原文,但是实际上没有翻译出我们古汉文的妙处,她会有更深层次的含义的,仅仅翻译原文似乎力道不够。
deal or not, friendship remains.

Well, 正是因为一篇写得好的古文通常显得简洁而有力, 所以翻译时忠于原文才变得如此重要.

The original phrase "买卖不成仁义在" apparently refers to one particular failed deal, not deals in general.

That this is indeed the case can be seen from the fact that most failed deals generate a bitter after-taste.

So it is important to point out here that although the deal didn't go through, there was no such bitter after-taste and that friendship still remains, or better still, residual goodwill still remains.

The rarity of the situation (no bitterness) determines that "deal or not, friendship remains" cannot be the correct translation because it is too generalized.

In addition, "Deal or not" is improper as a standalone phrase because "deal" is a noun, while "not" isn't.

To be more proper, it should have been "Deal or no deal."

In sum, the best faithful translation of the original phrase should be "Residual goodwill outlasts the failed deal."

A shorter version would be "Friendship outlasts the failed deal."

You can also substitute the word "botched" for "failed" in the sentence.

Yes you're right, and I had considered using "goodwill" to connote the "good feelings" mentioned above.

However, that means one more word has to be added before goodwill as i ...
