In the early 1960s, Buffett started to invest in Berkshire, then a struggling textile maker, and took it over in 1

there are two possible meanings ,one is "at the time" , the other is "afterwards".
I think it must be  "at the time" ,but still daren't draw the conclusion .
what is your point ?

It does mean "at that time". It refers to Berkshire, meaning that Berkshire was at that time a struggling textile maker. This is a convenient way of expressing a number of related ideas within one compact sentence.

To mean "afterwards", you would use "later" in place of "then".

The sentence reminds me a adverb used to modify a noun ,"Even" .

Even a tough man would go tearful when reading this heartrending story.

"Even" is placed in front of "a" .
The usage of "Then" in the former is quite similar with that.
could you enumerate several sentences using "Then a" ? thank you .

A company named Berkshire was making textiles. They were having business difficulties. Before 1965, "Buffett " (it Buffett a person or a business) had been investing money in the business and in 1965, had invested enough money to grain control of the Berkshire Textiles.
