You know these 4:

Reading
Writing
Listening
Speaking

What about THINKING?!?!?
People say you will reach this point after years of study, when you are fluent. NO! You can think in English NOW. Just do it. It will help you improve all those other 4 categories!

For example, you are home cooking dinner. Think in your mind:
"I'm putting water in the pot. Now I'm turning the stove on (use some chinese words if you don' t know the english ones)... now I am cutting the vegetables... oh maybe I need more 葱,is there more in the refrigerator? I'll go look. ... Now I am cutting the chicken. I hope I don't cut my finger. I remember a long time ago my mother cut her finger.... blah blah blah..."

Think in English...
on the subway/bus
at work
while shopping
walking down the street
in the bathroom
laying in bed at night
getting ready for work in the morning

EVEN IF IT"S WRONG or half chinese! It's ok, it's better than nothing!

I think in chinese sometimes.
On the subway, watching the video that showed video of the new subway, there were no words, so I imagined what they might say, and it was quite funny in my mind:
"你看,北京的最新的地铁! 很干净, 你看那个垃圾桶?(because the video showed a garbage can) 你一定要用! 别 litter! 但是,如果别人litter, 没问题, 你看那个工人打扫? (the video showed a lady cleaning).... 你 看, 这个地铁最快的! 比汽车快! 比自行车快!(it showed a car and bike, then a person) 这个地铁比老人快! 当然你很爱坐我们的地铁!
haha...
I imagined that in my mind in a funny way, and I almost laughed on the subway, and it was silly fun little practice to remember some words, like cleaning, and garbage can, and to compare things (比).... so even if it's not perfect, you see, it can be very useful and fun.

Now I will go make a cup of tea in chinese.

Take the train at night. That's what happened to me. You will have a long friendly conversation with people. You have to travel during the low season not the high season. During the low season, the train is not as crowded.

can't kill myself just yet...

i'm NOT sure whether the TRAN's thing or public transportation sucks (been there & done it)...no more public transportation inside of china for me (we getting smart now by hiring privately own mini van there to get around with an unofficial body guard  ).  why did i have to mention the extra details, because the world we're living now is totally a mess especially for any foreigners that travel for more than 8 people...you NEED security & you CAN'T be skimmed on the budget !

HEYyou...you're right about traveling during the off peak season, so that i WILL miss all the fun there...j/k

Freaky, your Chinese seems to have picked up quite a bit. Are you studying the language in Beijing?

Well, "studying" is a strong word. I took a class for a while but had to stop due to my work schedule. I keep telling myself I'll start again.
But, I'm living here, so I'm of course trying to use it as much as possible.

WHAT DID I THINK IN CHINESE TODAY?
I imagined what I might say later at the restaurant when I go out with my friends. This time, instead of just accepting what they say they have for tofu, I'm going to ask if they can make GongBao Tofu, with cucumber.

WHAT did YOU think in YOUR other language today?
(really people, answer here)
I am not rich.  :L
