my guess is we human mimic the sound  made by animals or whatever in an approximate way and that is exactly  where the difference in pronunciation comes from. Think about it, usually there are a lot of versions for the same thing when it comes to approximation. even the people in different regions of our country do it differently.

anybody checks my "theory"?
