I personally think it is a great movie.

It is thought-provoking. The characters are vividly-portrayed. I do not think that Wong Kai Chi betrayed her organization for the big diamond.

If one ...

Lacaterina,

Well-written and thank you.  Like I said earlier, your writing almost made me change my thought about the female protagonist (Wang Jiazhi) and the movie.

Just a few curious questions though on where you gather all your thoughts …

(a)        from the movie solely?

(b)        from book/s you read about the movie?

(c)        Or both, the movie and the book?

To be fair, let me also share with you the reason why I watched the movie.

Though I had participated earlier (and briefly) in a discussion on this movie in this Forum, I had not known that it was a hotly debated movie in Mainland China until I watched a Talk Show on Phoenix channel last Saturday.  What moved me was not so much the debates (between the patriotic and more liberal Chinese participants) but a snippet which the Talk Show presented where the real sister of the female protagonist (an old lady and now living in the USA) spoke up against the movie and its portrayal and distortion of her sister and what actually happened.

I am curious to know what was shown in the movie and what actually happened or what it should have been.

I found out something after watching the movie and have made my judgement.

My conclusion (which I will elaborate later) is that Lust and Caution is just a movie, a pornography or a pornographic movie (certain a “rated” and “adult” movie) and it has got nothing to do with “patriotism” or the “political” contents which many assume was its purpose or one of its purposes.

Was there a distortion of the truth and facts?  At least, the movie or 李安 was not "sincere" and not sincere enough in dealing with some of the pertinent issues and questions which would make the movie more complete and less "lop-sided" towards its pornographic leaning.

Ps: the Talk Show has a part 2 to be aired this Saturday.  Now, I will have a better reason and a better understanding of the discussions and the controversy when it will be aired.

I forgot the characters' names, so, I will use their real name. I think Wang LeeHom sympathize her at the end for the pain she had gone through. The leader is just a heartless person that is wh ...

Ah yes, I forgot the names of most of the characters too, other than the main female and male protagonists - Wang Jiazhi and Mr Yee.

Where does that leave us to understand the movie and its objective?

Lifesong, I DISAGREE with you.

For Wang Jiazhi, if the movie portrayal of her was true, then she deserves our censure a 100 times, 200 times, 500 times and 1,000 times, whateve ...

A FUNDAMENTAL MISTAKE? NO. She should not be censured, and Mr. Yi should be censured. Wang Jiazhi was only a tragical character. With the momentary slip of feeling, she was not able to restrain herself.

I have to agree with this.

Then no one wants to watch it if it has to deal with pertinent issue. You know a lot of women went to watch the movie just to see Tony's private part. Ang Lee earned a lot of women's money on this movie.
