Chinanews, Beijing, September 12 – Gao Lei, an editor of a newspaper, has a very good build. “Many people want to know how I have managed to keep fit, and my answer is ‘by walking’,” said Gao.

Nowadays, people in sneakers can be seen walking in big strides on the street of Beijing every morning, many of them being white collars walking to work.

“I started walking to and from work because the gasoline was too expensive,” said Jia, a civil servant, who bought a car two years ago. With the rising gasoline price and car maintenance fees, every month Jia had to invest at least 1,000 yuan on his car. Besides, due to heavy traffic jam every morning, it took him nearly 40 minutes to drive to his office, not much faster than by walking.

“At first I found it very tiring to go to work on foot, and it took me twenty minutes longer than by care. Soon I found that I could listen to English tapes on the way, and walking made me feel healthier and healthier. By the way, I now believe walking has also made me more optimistic,” said Jia.

Though in the very beginning, most white collars who walked to work were those who lived near their workplace, today many of those who live in suburbs but work in downtown areas have also joined the trend, spending 2 or 3 hours on the way every morning.

can't believe they spend 2-3 hours on walking to office.
