him=death
entertain means ( archaic sense) to hold in mind, to think about seriously
at home: Idiom

Francis Bacon was telling us to face death bravely, perhaps to discover some truth about it.
If winter comes, can spring be frozen ahead?

“Death is a friend of ours; and he that is not ready to entertain him is not at home.”

死亡是我们的一个朋友;一个全没准备招待它的人不会自在

I think it means one should realize that death is some unwelcome "friend" who can suddenly drop in anytime and if a person is not prepared for the "surprise" s/he won't be at ease (live happily).

I have something to add and if could edit my own post I would....

I think maybe "at home" here can be translated as "到家" (!= arrive at home) or  "看透"

Let me make some guesses:

Death is a friend of ours------ Everyone ( Or everyone's physical body ) dies, thus the timeless topic--- death.   We have heard a lot of arguments over the death issue. The center of debate has been whether our consciousness survives death, that there is afterlife.

he that is not ready to entertain him   is not at home---- those  who take for granted that nothing is left when one dies would not like to talk about death at all ( close-minded skeptics,  for example), because they fear death. For those who believe in afterlife or soul after death, death is not a "scary" thing at all.

It seems that Francis Bacon belonged to the latter camp.

I don't think so.

at home means "at home"
drive home means ‘return to one's house by car"

Hope it helps
