Steve McClaren yesterday gave David Beckham a measured warning that he will have to prove he is still worthy of a place in the England squad. Having referred to the end of last season as "probably the best two months of [Beckham's] career," the head coach made it clear that nothing is to be taken for granted now that the midfielder has left Real Madrid and joined LA Galaxy.
Asked if he could conceivably drop Beckham for a second time, McClaren replied: "That's a decision I'm ready and willing to make." No threat was intended but the coach did want to stress that special assurances will be denied a player who was restored to England colours for the friendly with Brazil during May before being highly influential in the Euro 2008 qualifier victory over Estonia in June.
Coming as I did from a family with no income at all,and with no prospects whatever, college was the narrow door that led darkness into light.
