If you attend, either of two things will happen to you and only you after attending:

one, you will feel miserable when you try to bury the feeling from the past; or
two, you will feel better when you think you have learnt how to forget him.

Of course, there is a third thing but it concerns him and her only; if he tells her you were his ex-, she may feel either triumphant or sad, both of which can't be good for her, and thus, them.

now: one is not good for you; two is also not good for you because if you can feel better about forgetting someone you've been close to before, then no matter whatever the reason, it shows you have created a firewall from being affected by true feelings; and three is also not good for you because it is not good for two other human beings.

just send them a nice card, and if you can afford, some money with it to help pay for the dinner.

next, how you spend your time not attending the dinner is entirely up to you.

i am a terrible person to give such a precise answer - are you already proud of me?
