However, in fluent English, shame is a substitution that could work by connotation.

我的理解,“家家有本难念的经”是各自有自己的烦恼、自己的困难,但不一定是耻辱的丑事。

我比较同意这两个:
Every family has its own problem.
Every family has its own share of challenges.

实际使用时还要考虑到,“家家”其实是泛指,不一定要译为 family。

every family has some sort of trouble;

or   every family has its own hard nut to crack.
life is absurd, get over it!!

You're right, but the dictionary definition of 'shame' in English, and the implied meaning of 'shame' in the saying are different. Shame in this case isn't going by it's denoted meaning, rather it could mean just some kind of subject you wouldn't want to tell others.

Of course I'm not saying it's the best way to express it, I'm simply saying that it does work as a substitute. And it flows a bit smoother than a more literal translation if you're speaking to a foreigner. The point will still get across.

对不起, 我主在了外国太长了。会念中文但是写的时候......too much thinking to conjure up the appropriate words.
