They tax you with some of the highest rates in the world and give you "some" back in medical care.

Not just medical care. Maybe harregarre could brief us on the full range of state benefits offered in the Netherlands.

In China the real rate of tax is very low so people can choose where their priority lays

And those that don't have the money are stuck. The whole point with taxation in somewhere like the Netherlands is that everyone has access to the same services to try to reduce inequality, rather than have the poor being left with nothing.

Many of those overseas have a grudge towards China and it may well be understandable.

I'm not sure he meant "grudge" - I thought he meant more that they saw problems in the country that need fixing.

The Chinese I come across here are normally in the UK temporarily or were born in China and just looking for work overseas. They all still like China and don't bear any "grudges". The minority are those born here.

Hehe, yeah I think grudges might be a wrong way to put it. It's more like the problems they see, yes.

And Mencius is right, the reason why we have taxes is to reduce inequality. It is done this way:

Rich people pay a high percentage of taxes.
Average people pay an average percentage of taxes.
Poor people pay a low percentage of taxes.

The money that's gained from this, is evenly spread as a cover for people who need medical care, who get unemployed because of medical reasons and for single mothers who have to raise kids on their own. Another important aspect is that with these taxes the schoolexpenses for poorer kids are paid, so that everyone can enjoy education at the highest level and not be limited by their financial capabilities.

Does the education system give free or cheaper access to universities?

Is there a state-pension/pension scheme where the government helps you put money aside for retirement? Tax credits or benefits for families with children, day care, etc? I don't know a lot about the Dutch system - what else do you get back for your tax other than free health-care and education?

Free or cheaper depends on your parents income. If you're really poor it will be free of expenses. Students who decide to rent a room near the university get additional funding so they have more time to study instead of working.

And yes, there's a pension scheme. This is usually regulated within a business itself, but is an obligatory aspect of a contract. Besides that, there's also a "base"-pension for everyone, even those who haven't worked because of illness or something like that. There's another rule that helps people who have a long injury, but will be able to work later. This can range from a hernia to a burn-out. You will receive 170% of your previous income over the next two years. The way this is paid differs. It can be 100% in the first year and 70% in the second year. Or 90% / 80%.

Of course, part of the taxes are also used for improving our dykes, constructing roads, etc.
