It's the 300th anniversary of the Treaty of Union, which united Scotland and England under the British Kingdom after sharing a king for 100 years and many years of fighting.

But May 1 offered no loud celebration in eigher country, because "British" identity has lost its appeal and, according to some, surrendered its uniqueness.


There are the painted-on differences that try to assert cultural identity. For instance, some carpark entrance signs are translated into Gaelic. But these aren't differences as much as they are reminders of the past.
