This kind of thing has happened before, and the British sailors were returned without too much trouble.

Ahem, they were paraded on Iranian State TV blindfolded and forced to apologise - you're not saying you wouldn't complain if that was done to men from your navy, would you?

Good for the goose good for the gander.

This episode will center on the legality of the British mariners to be where they were. The Iranian authorities have indicated that they can prove that the British sailors were in Iranian waters.  If this is so, let the simple process of law and order takes its course. Armed personnels found in a sovereign territory without permission are called saboteurs or invading force. Their capture is both legal and responsible by the sovereign authorities. These are not POW as there is no declared war between the UK and Iran. They are the " illegal combatants " courtesy of the American jingo department. They will be kept at a place not dissimilar to Guantanamo Bay Hilton " at the President's pleasure ".  This is theatre at its best.

Guantanamo Bay in fact houses people captured outside the USA in a third country. One law for us and another for the rest of the human race.
...

And how many of these are Iranian diplomats?

The US embassy hostages were subject to Diplomatic immunity by international convention. This was breached by the Iranian authorities.

Yes this is history, but it has led to the mistrust and lack of proper diplomatic relations between the US and Iran over the last quarter century, and the Iranian authorities have got to take their share of the blame for that.

The Iranians claim a lot of things these days - it doesn't mean they're credible. Even China thinks their claims to researching nuclear tech for peaceful means is crap (otherwise they wouldn't have backed new sanctions).

Either way they had finished with their search and were returning back to their frigate. It's ridiculous to take these people hostage, especially given the territorial issues in the area aren't resolved yet. Minor border infringements aren't worth this sort of bother in most cases - most sensible countries would warn the other side and ask them to leave. The fact the Iranians didn't request them to leave first rather shows that they're acting maliciously. They're risking escalation next time UK and Iranian naval forces come into proximity with each other. Or maybe that's what they're hoping for so they can whip up some popular sentiment to take the domestic pressure off their president.

If this is so, let the simple process of law and order takes its course.

That might be difficult considering that Iranian justice is sometimes decided before the trial starts. But of course, I forgot. To you all white men are criminals so there's no need to have a trial.

Last time I looked Guantanamo was run by the Americans - or can't the Iranians tell the difference between white men?

Slippery customers.

A hearty welcome back  to the famous tag-team of E&M  . Not much has changed I gather. Still struggling , albeit together, to fight their way out of a wet paper bag.

You will note, if you re-read your own posts, that there is a theme of  " they were naughty before , so why should we trust them " or "  it is just a minor touch of pregnancy ". This loose and elastic application of the rule of law when your side is in infrigement is good reading. The fantastic spin, the funny slide and slither and the familiar side stepping must make Beckham jealous. No, the good law says that if you incur and invade by even an inch , it is still a full blown violation of international borders. I do not imagine that your good governments would be so generous if the reverse happended.  By whose leave are your troops in Iraq then? Whose invitation and when ?   Humbug and Hypocrisy are alive and well and live in the UK and Oz.

The sailors captured yesterday were carrying out routine anti-smuggling operations in support of UN Security Council resolution 1723.
