China can stop calling itself poor when it can generate a $20 trillion economy.

But most of the wealth, probably half of it, would by siphoned out to foreign coffers. However, China's economy has the potential to reach $30 trillion and more. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be enough for 'everyone' in the country.

There will always be poor people. It's sad but that's the way it will be.

Some blames it on capitalism. But without capitalism to motivate the abled men to amass wealth internationally, wealth would not flow in into the country. And no amount of wealth can satisfy people of 'poor-man mentality'. They'll waste it all anyhow.

Therefore, 'people development' is of utmost importance to achieve total eradication of poverty.

Most importantly, the number of poors will have to be kept at its minimum or it will be the seed of future problems.

Ideally, China has to achieve zero poverty if possible.

In non-economic terms, China has constantly been one of the richest countries in the world; culture, arts, history and social ferment.

Today it is one of the culturally poorest countries I have seen, though.  Historically, yes.

I do not know where you got those figure, But it is really very doutful.

China surely get the fourth GDP in the world ,just behind US. Japan. and Germany. According to this ,Maybe china really can be called "rich courntry".
But , do not forget , labour productivity  per capita is only 1/26 of US. and even 1/27 of Japan. will you still want to say china is "rich"? China's HIGH GDP IS JUST DEPEND ON INEFFECTIVE COST OF ENERGY AND MATERIAL. AND HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION,( AND THE POOR PAYMENT LEVEL ). And the economy relies on those foreign-funded factory too much. Chinese people need a continuous development . Nobody want to be a "baofahu".

Thinking of this ,I really feel a little heart-ache.

i think it's not proper to define a country poor or not only by GDP.Real rich means good surrounding ,small gap between the rich and the poor ,high level public health system. Can any country be called "rich or not poor" without  these factors?

i think Mr. deef22 is right!

Look at level of services of education, health.
Look at affordability of food, homes, products....

note: Per capita GNP US$5,000 at present status would be ideal. out of relative poorness!
