Prdie and Substance

Chairman Mao gave us back our pride, swept away the myth that China is the sickman of East Asia.

Deng, Xiao Ping laid the economic foundation for over 25 years of uninterrupted growth at close to double digits, firmly establishing that SWCC is the most effective and beneficial form of government in human history in the last quarter century, and of course the best in Chinese history.

Both did wonders for the Chinese psyche, and together they reversed China's decline at the hands of foreigners for the last 300 years.  With any luck, and the continued efforts of the capable Chinese leaders, China will regain her berth of being the richest and most technologically advanced nation on earth, before the century is over.

Those are rather big boots to fill, as far as national heroes go.

MAO ZEDONG
MAO ZEDONG

Mao Zedong was a Chinese Marxist theorist, soldier, poet, and statesman who led China's communist revolution after decades of foreign occupation and civil war in the 20th century. Following the Communist Party of China's military victory over the Kuomintang in the Chinese Civil War, Mao announced the establishment of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949 in Beijing.

Mao Zedong was a very practical person before 1949. He did many thorough investigations about China and he developed his theories based on his studies. He was so successful in his early years that people worshipped him and everyone loved him.

Mao was a great thinker. He gave women the same right as men.

Mao pursued the ideal of strong and prosperous China, endeavoring to build a modern, industrialized nation.

Until his death, Mao maintained control of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China through both political acumen and a cult of personality, the latter resulting in such sobriquets as Grand Helmsman and Saviour of China.

Lao Zi

Lao Zi, founder of Taoism, lived during the Spring and Autumn Period.

He is considered by most scholars as the author of the book Dao De Jing (The Book of Virtue).

Lao Zi used the concept of the "Dao" (Way) to explain all changes in the universe, and put forward dialectical ideas such as:

"Dao gives rise to one, one gives rise to two, two gives rise to three and three gives rise to all other things",

"All things under Heaven came from something which in turn came from nothing" and

"Good fortune lies within bad, bad fortune lurks within good".

In aesthetics, he advocated the concepts of "Great sound is rarely heard" and "Great images have no forms".

The theory of Lao Zi exerted a great impact on the development of philosophy in China, and later scholars made use of his thinking in various ways.

The Dao De Jing has been translated into many languages. Apart from its philosophical views, the moral principles standing for universal love as expressed in the following words "To honor others' aged people as we honor our own; and to be kind to others' young as we are to our own" are often quoted with approval by people today.

Asteroid 7854 Laotse was named after him.

Confucius

Confucius transliterated Kong Fuzi or K'ung-fu-tzu, lit. "Master Kong", traditionally (551 - 479 BCE) was a famous Chinese thinker and social philosopher, whose teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced East Asian life and thought.

He toured various states during the Spring and Autumn Period advocating his ideas on right conduct, in order to shore up aristocratic rule.

Later he devoted his energy to teaching by opening schools and enrolling some 3,000 students. Among them, seventy-two were noted scholars who helped compile ancient books and put his teachings into the book titled The Analects.

His philosophy emphasised personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism or Daoism during the Han Dynasty. Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism. It was introduced to Europe by the Jesuit Matteo Ricci, who was the first to Latinise the name as "Confucius".

For 2,000 years, Confucianism was the dominating force in the feudal society of China, exerting a significant impact on the stability and moral principles of society. To learn Chinese culture, it is better to learn some Confucianism since it has been well integrated in Chinese culture and is the official state philosophy for over 2000 years. Confucianism is part of the Chinese people's daily life as it is the foundation of Chinese family structure, and the guidance for personal attitudes and behaviors.

Having spread to East and Southeast Asia, his thinking became an important guiding ideology in many countries, making Confucius a world-level thinker.

Confucius's contribution is in his ideas about the government, school, family, and ethics, and in his teaching.

Um, didn't one of them have the other of them purged?
Didn't Deng repudiate Mao's Cultural Revolution and wasn't he the target of a number of failed assassination attempts by Maoists?

CUI JIAN

In 1980s when most Chinese had little knowledge of rock music, Cui Jian, born in August 1961 in Beijing and known as father of China's rock music, presented his two rock songs to rock fans across China: Rock on the New March, and Restart. Wherever Cui Jian and his band gave their performance, they were greeted with large audiences' crazy hailing and rocking, and his sound controller had to switch the music sound to a volume as high as 150d. With the strong beat of Penniless, Red Cloth, False Monk, the Girl in Flower Shop, Cui Jian shouted out his feelings about the world around him, arousing enormous resonance among his fans. Media then said, "Rock rightly satisfies the demand of his generation to speak out what they feel." Rock has in a certain sense become a new type of criticism of the existing social problems in China.

Rock in China was first introduced by Cui Jian in 1986. He harmoniously merged the strong beat of Western music into the local folk music in North Shanxi Province on the Huangtu Plateau. His Penniless, which was once sung all over China, is the first rock song in China.

Before singing his Penniless, Cui Jian was a little-known trumpet performer in Beijing Symphony Orchestra, where he concentrated upon performing only world-famous tunes. In his leisure time, he held his favorite guitar and imitated those Western rock stars.

After Rock on the New March, he created his Not That I Don't Know Your Heart, Give Me a Good Sleep, Last Shot, and Loneliness Is a Fire, which stirred more high waves among audiences. In spite of this, he received both praise and criticism for such traditional revolutionary songs as Nanniwan.

Since May 1986, Cui Jian, with his unique and refreshing songs and voice and style, has won over large audiences from stars in Hang Kong and Taiwan. What's more, his songs have even appealed to a tremendous number of mid-aged Chinese intellectuals, who suffered a lot on their journey through the Cultural Revolution between 1966 and 1976.

Following Cui Jian, there came on to stage the rock bands like Tang Dynasty, Panther, Cobra, Hard Stone.
