I am white and I work in China. People ask me the same questions every day; these questions show the difference between my thinking and the thinking of those people asking the questions. Not all Chinese people ask me questions so some, many, may think differently.

Where do you come from?

Answer in my mind "West part of the city"
Answer they tell me they expected "USA or some whitey country"

When are you going home?

Answer in my mind "About half past ten, or earlier I feel tired"
Answer they tell me they expected "I'm going back to my country for Christmas"

Isn't western culture so shallow?

Answer in my mind "Aren't you comparing European culture over the past 50 years with Chinese culture in the Tang dynasty - if so, yes western culture is shallow.
Answer they tell me they expected "Yes, we westerners are uncivilised barbarians and you are so polite"

Are you an English teacher?

Answer in my mind "No"
Answer they tell me they expected "Yes"

What do you think of Chinese culture?

Answer in my mind "What do you mean by "culture" is it Tang dynasty ways? If so I have not studied it so I don't know. Or do you mean modern Chinese habits? Big cars, Chinese rap music and KTV."

Answer they tell me they expected "Yes, I've studied it in depth and it's great and you are all savants and sages"

Why did you come to China?

Answer in my mind "It is convenient for my work that I live here, and this place happens to be in China"
Answer they tell me they expected "I want to see the pandas"

The point of this thread is that my brain is wired in backwards to that of many Asian people - I get the same questions in other countries, it's not a China thing.

I wonder do Chinese students visiting the UK get asked questions that they feel are similarly perplexing?
:)
"We know it's weakness, but the weakness is so strong!"
