Migrant worker executed for killing rampage|
Updated: 2006-11-26 09:42
A Chinese court has executed a migrant worker for a rampage that left three dead and highlighted resentment over China's growing gap between rich and poor, state media reported Saturday.
Ai Xuqiang bludgeoned a taxi driver to death with an iron bar on September 11 last year and then drove the stolen taxi to Beijing's popular upscale shopping street, Wangfujing, running over nine pedestrians and killing two of them, the reports said.
A farmer from Hunan who worked as a laborer in Beijing, Ai told police he "hijacked the car to kill the damn rich and die together on Wangfujing," the Beijing Morning Post reported.
Ai, who was 32, was executed Friday on the orders of the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court, which earlier found him guilty of murder, the reports said, without specifying the manner of execution.
An egalitarian society a generation ago, China has an increasingly uneven distribution of wealth, in part a result of free-market reforms.
Media reports said Ai experienced many of the problems that farmers face when migrating to cities for often backbreaking and menial work. Since coming to Beijing in 2000, Ai frequently wasn't paid by his employers, the Beijing Morning Post said, and his sister told police that Ai had seemed alienated and suicidal.
Ai thought he was "'enacting revenge on the damn rich' but in fact his victims were ordinary Chinese working hard to make money," the newspaper said.
