I think it also depends on your level of self-confidence.

Self-confidence has to be built.

When you haven’t reached that stage of self-confidence, the opinions of others do matter to you and that is when you seek acceptance by them.

But once you have reached the level of self-confidence and certainty, knowing where you want to go and who you want to be, the opinions of others matter less.

In life, it is difficult to avoid the opinions of people around you and the more so if the person is someone who matters to you.

On the other hand, consider the opinions that others have of you and ask if you share their opinions and if you want to be changed by their opinions; if not, why not, if yes, why yes.

Learn to develop your own thoughts and thinking …. it is a way to building up your own self-confidence.  Reading up and reflecting upon one’s deeds, asking many questions and be not afraid to ask them, right or wrong, for better or for worse.

Often, you will not get immediate answers but they are an accumulation of knowledge about yourself.

A frustrated you today will be an enlightened you tomorrow.

I’d rather be like you than a happy lark, smug and doesn’t stop to think.

Well, I can’t ask you to stop feeling what you feel right now but you will come through that stage.

Perhaps, I can suggest one thing to you – trust yourself and trust yourself a little more.  Important thing, don’t give up.

Not exactly,i believe that if you care someone, you care someone's thought of you.
For example you do care your bf,and you would care his thought of you.

Good girl imrita,

You got it right spot on.  If you can not respect yourself then how can you expect others to respect you.

I do care about what others think of me. If I have integrity then it shows. I have come to learn this through experience. I am content with how others see me.

there is no one but longs to hear praise.
but we need to control the extent of that.
we should understand what the reality should recognize youself.
if so, you will have a happiness life .
Real beauty lies not in the physical appearance,
but in the heart.

I don't generally worry what others think; however, being in a new country and a strange situation, I am concerned sometimes. In my own country, I can guess what others think, but here it is impossible since I don't know the culture so well.

I am always very curious as to what strangers think when they see me here. Some seem a little resentful, or untrusting, but most are very friendly and quickly return a smile and nod. Of course, I usually can't find out much beyond that due to the language barrier.

I agree, however, that self-confidence is more important than the opinions of others. Even more, I think that self-confidence (without conceit) inspires others to have confidence in you and makes a person easier to like.
