[参考译文] Chinese people has never thought of human being as the highest creature among everything since ancient times, whose reflection takes a quite approporate[sic] proportion with all others in our natural world in both aspects of philosophy and arts, but not as an absolute dominant ruler. Therefore, our bitterness and depression are basically less than those of westerners, because the intensity of which is growing with the expansion of one's desire and ambition. People in the agriculture society enjoyed far less than people in the industry society, thus their wants are far less either. Besides, ancient Chinese always regard "not confined by material, not driven by material" as the major philosophy. It not means we do not have misers, but in comparison with Mauriat[sic] and Balzac's miser and aspirant, that is dwarfed. Chinese people almost characterized by moderation, peacefulness, insecular, plainess[sic], and easier to get satisfied than westerners.

here is my try:

The Chinese as a people have never had the thoughts since ancient times that man is above all other life or non-life forms.
In philosophy and liberal arts, this is shown as man being in harmonious relation with all others in nature instead of having absolute power to rule.
因此我们的苦闷,基本上比西方人为少为小;
Therefore, we Chinese suffer basically less depression than our counterpart in the west.
This is because the extent in which one feels depressed depends on how much expectation and ambition one holds.
In a farming society, the living standards were much lower than in an industrial society and accordingly the expectation was much lower, too.
In addition, the ancient Chinese people always preferred a philosophy for life guidance that advocated detachment from possession of wealth and fame, and from the desire for possession as well.
It does not mean that we lacked slaves of wealth or ambitious men, but what we could have would be dwarfed when compared with those described by Moliere and Balzac in their books.
The Chinese people are mostly modest, calm, sincere, and honest in character. They would prefer a simple life and be easier to satisfy than the westerners.

刚一上手用的是 man occupying an appropriate position relative to all others.
