Moon vs. Mars

As several pointed out above, Mars had its closest approach to Earth in over 50,000 years on Aug. 27, 2003.  It won't come as close again until Aug. 28, 2287.  In the 2003 approach Mars was 55.86 million km away and had an apparent diameter of 25.16 arc SECONDS.  That means that it was still a small disk, even when seen in a small telescope.

The Moon averages about 385,000 km from Earth.  The apparent diameter of the full moon varies between 29.87 and 33.75 arc MINUTES depending on the distance from Earth.  Since an arc minute is 60 times larger than an arc second, the Moon ALWAYS appears more than 60 times larger than Mars.

It looks like someone got minutes and seconds confused in the original web reports.  Oh well, that happens to me too.  Sometimes minutes seem like seconds, and sometimes they seem like hours. :):):)
