The Dream of the Red Mansions (c.1760), also known by the title of The Story of the Stone, is the great novel of manners in the Chinese literature.
For the people who are bent on Chinese traditional culture, this novel is a good buttress for them to study and refer.
The novel has charted the process of glory and decline of the illustrious Jia family. The two main characters, Bao-yu and Dai-yu were lively depicted by author under realistic detail and delicate poetry, which closely reflected the feudal formalization in Chinese traditional family life.
The two main characters' fortunes were bound along with the downfall of their own family, so the novel was doomed to be a cothurn, which was differed with other Chinese traditional novels of leaning to the optimistic finale.
For offspring, this novel has the great historical value to be studied for its exquisite literature, as well as the Chinese traditional religion, sociology and pedigree reflected in the novel. In China, the seminar of Red Mansions has flourished for many years.
This novel has been republished on TV screen as a teleplay in 1980. Maybe till now, some of us are still impressed by the classic teleplay, so let's have a retrospect together again.
This is really difficult to read.
Personally, i don't think this is a good novel, those people live a luxuriant and meaningless life there and they are like parasites. Nothing encouraging but may tell some truth of the big feudalist family in ancient China.
However, there are so many people think it's good, even foreigners, and there is a translation contest for the Dream of the Red Mansion. You may think i am rude to say this, but i just say my thought.
