ever since when i was a little kid, being patriotic has seemed to be some sort of  your duty or the way you have to be unconditionally. and some times i couldnt help wondering, WHY? what exactly is the reason that we have to be patriotic? is there anyone here who does not like his/her own country? let's say there is a war going on, would you join the army and serve your country?

I'd say love your country (if you're going to be a long-term resident), but don't love blindly. Understand others' criticisms--what may be triggering them; what's true; what's false. Also, remember you are human before you are Chinese/American/British/Japanese/whatever; humanity transcends nationality.

If you have nothing but ill will towards your country, you should move.

I wouldn't say patriotism is stupid, but I wouldn't join the army because of it.

I also love what sockmonkey said about being human before you are... your nationality. "Humanity transcends nationality".

We are all ONE family, of humans. We all have to live on this planet, and so do our innocent children, grandchildren, etc, so let's not be stupid and ruin it or kill other humans who have emotions and hopes, just like we do.

Most Americans love their country. They have their national anthem and flag to prove their feelings.

Most Canadians love their country. They have their national anthem and flag to show their feelings.

Most chinese people love their country. They have their national anthem and flag to express their feelings.

When invaded by others, the people of the land would definitely take up arms to defend and expell the invaders.

Love your own country and be a smart but not a blinded patriotic citizen.

Just for your interest, the following is the Official Lyrics of the Canadian National Anthem:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

The last two sentences in "O Canada" clearly answer your second question. Our government has recently approved a hugh amount of resources to upgrade our military establishment.:)

Can someone please post the Chinese and US national anthems here . Thank you in advance.:)

This link: http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Library/9897/ has the lyrics to every country's national anthem - some in English, some in the native language, some in both. Here is the US's lyrics. Honestly I had no clue it was that long. Thank goodness we only sing the first part or we'd all be snoozin'....   (I'll put China's next)

Spangled Banner

Oh, say can you see
by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we
hailed at the twilight's
last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes
and bright stars thru
the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we
watched were so
gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red
glare, the bombs
bursting in air,
Gave proof thru the
night that our flag was
still there.
Oh, say does that
star-spangled banner
yet wave
O'er the land of the
free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly
seen through the mists
of the deep,
Where the foe's
haughty host in dread
silence reposes,
What is that which the
breeze, o'er the
towering steep,
As it fitfully blows,
half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the
gleam of the morning's
first beam, In full glory reflected
now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled
banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the
free and the home of the brave.

And where is that
band who so
vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war
and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country
should leave us no more!
Their blood has
washed out of of their
foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save
the hireling and slave'
From the terror of
flight and the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled
banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the
free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever,
when freemen shall stand
Between their loved
home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and
peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that
hath made and
preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we
must, when our cause
it is just,
And this be our
motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled
banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the
free and the home of the brave.

China's national anthem lyrics, in English, from above site.

Arise, ye who refuse to be slaves;
With our very flesh and blood
Let us build our new Great Wall!
The peoples of China are in the most critical time,
Everybody must roar his defiance.
Arise! Arise! Arise!
Millions of hearts with one mind,
Brave the enemy's gunfire,
March on!
Brave the enemy's gunfire,
March on! March on! March on!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I randomly browsed through some, and I like Nigeria's best out of the ones I came across. It's very humble and respectful, not  forceful.
