The pronounciation of the number 4 in Chinese, is "si" (死,die); and 14, " shi si" (是死,yes, die); 40 "si shi" ( 死尸, the dead body); The Chinese are delibately avoiding these numbers especially those on car license plate. i am agonized to see sb. add me 4 extra  credits, why 4, not 5 or 3, ...... it may sounds superficial......

some people pay more money to get a license plate with numbers like 6, 8, that means getting rich. when you buy a new cellphone or ......, will choose some good numbers to bring good luck:)

I like the number 6, because it is pronounced sex in my language.

But I really hate the number 1.4142135623731..., because it is irrational.

An even more despicable number is 1.64872127070013..., because it is transcendental!

The most lovely number is e^-i, though.

I don't believe any numbers can bring bad luck. And if the numbers are different for different people or cultures, well, then how do we account for that? Of course, coming into another culture I would respect it and try to remember not to give gifts that have to do with 4, etc..

What's 1.64872127070013... and why is it transcendental? Did that famous guru in the 60's tell the Beatles to chant it as their mantra? (no really, what is that number?)

Personally I like 0, it is very strong-willed and does not want to be divided by anything.
(Or can it be divided nowadays? I'm not a math person)

Liangzai you'll be happy to know what I learned a few weeks ago - that 6 is also a Perfect Number. Perfect, and sounds like sex... hmm....

(perfect number = all its factors except itself add up to it; 1 +2 +3 = 6)

That's the square root of e = 2.71..., which in itself is transcendental (margins too narrow for a proof).

6 is a perfect number because its divisors 1, 2, 3 add up to the number itself. 1 + 2 + 3 = 6 (also note that 1 x 2 x 3 = 6).

28 is the next perfect number: 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14 = 28.

Now consider this:

1 / 6 + 1 / 3 + 1 / 2 + 1 / 1 = 2

1 / 28 + 1 / 14 + 1 / 7 + 1 / 4 + 1 / 2 + 1 / 1 = 2

The same is true for every perfect number.

Negative numbers always mean bad luck. Ask any accountant.

In China especially Southern China, the last number you want to pull out is '4' since it is pronunced the same as 'death'. If you say our favorite number is '4' people actually wont want to be too close to you. It's a powerful number because the real estate and streets all avoid 4...which is why some real-estate places is aligned by street 1,2,3,5 ...odd huh.
