free thinking is not possible

Of course there will always be obstacles like budget and government approval to overcome. But praising Lee's winning of the award and banning his movie is highly self-contradictory of the C.CP. Banning the movie only boosts sales for pirated DVDs.

I thought Lee Ao made his point crystal clear to all Beida students and everyone who happened to tune-in in China... that China still lacks the environment for independent free thinking people. I understand that POLITICS is everything for the CC.P and its members, but to much of the 1.3 billion people, they could really care less. All they want is an environnment in which they are given the freedom to excel in whatever it is they do, whether it's making a movie, writing a novel, directing play, etc.... Chinese culture and thinking is both deep and beautiful, we should let it all out instead of reppressing it under political ideology.

Irresponsibility is not freedom.  China does not need MF, MMF, MMMMMMMMMMMMF, MM, MMMMMMMMM, rape, incest, kiddie porn, snuff, etc. piped by cable to every home.  China does not desire to promote being gay as a beautiful thing.  This decade and perhaps the next, the energy and attention must still be focused, laser like, on growing the economy and building up a solid defense capablity so that no bully dare to knock on China's doors.  Allowing destructive forces to take hold is not in the cards.

twchinese:

Congratulations to Ang Lee for this great achievement.  But your question is a rather loaded question, and a sad attempt to politicize a happy achievement.  Can’t you just be happy when a Chinese does great, whether it’s Ang Lee, or Dr. David Ho, or the people in Chinese history that used out of the box thinking to create the Great Wall and other worldly achievements?  I’m happy, regardless of whether these achievements originate from the Mainland or Taiwan.

Agree with raymondusa.

I'm happy for Ang Lee,  not because he was Chinese. He directed the masterpiece Brokeback Mountain and finally won the Oscar. I love to see people who are recognized  for their hard and excellent work. Movie is movie, why relate that with politics? Chinese or American, who cares? I love Ang Lee for every splendid movie he brings to us. Politics, go hell.

Twchinese, whatever u think is ur business, don't disgrace Ang Lee.

i didnt politicize it

The C.CP is the one that banned the movie, not me. Doesn't anyone find it funny that the state media hails Lee Ang's success while the government has banned his work? How is it a true Chinese achievement when his work isn't even allowed to be shown in cinemas? So you are saying if someone does something the Chinese government doesn't approve of and wins an award outside China, then it's also a Chinese glory? Is this self-deceiving hypocrisy or just plain ignorance?

Ban of Brokeback Mounntain in mainland might be foolish, but understandable. Those who forget their origin  are both foolish and unpardonable.

warmsmile

What are you mumbling about?

It's true that Ang Lee wouldn't have been the Ang Lee today if he hadn't grown up in a Chinese culture, which underscores the importance of human interaction. But that's not the point... the point is that China's over-emphasis on politics and C.CP partylines limit the creativity of movie making and other forms of artistic expressions. That is why  "Lee must be the envy of Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige," Yang Rui, China Central Television host, said Monday night on his primetime talk show "Dialogue."
