Major mainland media hails Ang Lee's Oscar success as a Chinese cinematic achievement. But honestly, do readers really think China is able to produce free-thinking directors like Lee?

That is Such a Silly Comment

Who are the biggest directors on the human stage?  The top Chinese cadres direct resources millions of times more complex and more potent than any moviemaking, and with more ingenuity and apolmb and wisdom than the next 5 nations added together.

What is Bush's approval rating?  Chen, SB's?  How would that compare to Hu and Wen's?

Didn't the government of China tell Lee to stop making some movie a couple years ago? Anyway, I think he's a far better fighting movie director. Congrats on the Oscar, Ang!

What Better Way to Voice?

"What citizen of China would dare to voice their honest opinion of Hu or Wen?"

Chinese citizens voice it everyday by living happy, productive lives, fully and justifiably expecting a better tomorrow.  China's consumer confidence (a survey of whether they think life would be better 12 months from date) is the highest in this neck of the woods, according to A.C. Nielsen.

Film directors and government.

Japan and one of the world's most talented driectors began his career in wartime Japan (World War Two).  Akira Kurosawa directed several early films during WW2, including one where the women working in the lens factory make a spectacular effort to assure the quality of the lenses which will be used to aim weapons at American and British fighter planes.  It's quite a scene.

Kurosawa later said that a film made in 1947 was the first where he felt that he was completely free to act as he wished.  At one time, it was worried that the Emporer of Japan would ask the entire nation to commit honorable suicide instead of surrendering, which they called "The Honorable Death of the 100 Million."  Kurosawa said he and his friends agreed that their last act before suicide would be to kill the government censors.

So if you ask whether a film director can make successful movies in China, the answer is a qualified "yes."  There are limits to what any government or any big studio will accept even today, but there's also a marketing angle to it.  Studios in Western countries try to target their films to maximize profits.  So a film that has limited mass appeal will receive a smaller production budget and a more limited promotional effort from the studio.  The limited appeal films still have their markets, but they usually don't show at the suburban multiplexes.
