'becuase'   vs,   'because of'

1) Sadly, the Huletts have gone the way of the dinosaur, because few if any still exist.

Because.. I think. How to explain... my guess is that 'because' is used to introduce a clause with a cause (secundary sentence).. and 'because of' is used for giving a cause on itself.. hmm.. hard to explain with the right terms.. anyway, an example...

Sadly, the Huletts have gone the way of the dinosaur because of their threatening extinction. "because of" relates to extinction... in your sentence 'because' relates to 'few (if any) exist'.
