As Hong Kong and Hangzhou are following different policies in terms of car ownership, it is natural that Hangzhou residents choose to buy their own cars and Hong Kongers could not afford it.  This does not indicate the Hangzhou people are richer than Hong Kongers, not at all.

As for luxury goods: As many urban people, particularly the younger generations, are trying to be in the trend, and many would be willing to empty their pockets, or even total savings, for an item of luxury. This is skin deep pursuit of materials, and does not indicate they are richer, not at all.

When the younger genreations grow mature and they become rational consumers, I bet they will not pursue such stuff as they do now

Why the fever of pursuiting materials among young Chinese? They are affected by advertisments and pop culture in mass media. Consumerism helps economy but better spend on investment--building up knowledge, improving environment( both ecological and social environment). Donating money to the unforunate people so that you can help building a harmonic society. Buy unnecessary things would only create more garbage.
