Three Villains of Traffic Accident, Fatigue Speeding and Alcohol|
DUI (driving under influence usually of alcohol) is one of the culprits for traffic accidents. Among DUI accidents, vehicles are damaged and lives are lost. Even a great number of people could died or be injured. That is “A drop of alcohol for drivers, tears dropping of the loved ones”. Although DUI accidents are repeatedly happening in daily life, some drivers are still daring to take the risk, which causes the number DUI tragedies to increase. Stricter enforcement the traffic laws and harsher penalties should be applied and there should be more traffic patrols in accident-prone areas.
A proverb said, “Nine of ten traffic accidents are caused by fast driving”, so the drivers should “Rather stop three minutes than rush for a second”. Rushing to catch time, winning attitude and seeking for excitement are speeders psyche. Speeding not only makes avoiding collision more difficult but also makes collisions are more likely and severer. The higher speed the less steerability. High speed makes it very difficult to control the speed and direction in an emergency. The Hi-tech methods like electronic surveillance systems should be more widely applied to catch speeders.
Lack of enough sleep is the main cause for driver fatigue. The highest accident rate is for divers driving more than ten hours a day without at least four and half hours sleep. Lack of enough sleep cause divers continually yawning, rubbing eyes, and slow reactions of hands and foot. Therefore, sufficient sleep is necessary for safe driving. Heat and humidity are often making drivers fatigue. The statistics show that there are more traffic accidents caused by drivers fatigue and DUI than overloading and speeding, it has become “a new road killer”.
Besides, there are many violations of traffic laws such as driver making cellphone calls, driving without license, red light violations, tailgating and reckless changing lanes, even driving against traffic. Many drivers put a lot of decorating inside their vehicles, which distract the divers’ attention from the road, has become a potential danger. The safety features brought by new technologies are often offset by drivers’ unacceptable behaviors. Therefore, raising drivers’ safety awareness by education and public information has become the key issue.
