Li Ao's speech in Beijing University was widely covered by the western media, except that western journalists were not able to translate the core elements of the speech due to the language and cultural barrier. But Li explained what freedom means in the contexts of one's relation to himself and one's relation with the government.

He read the following quote from Mao's book: "Some people in our party have difficulties listening to dissenting opinions, why not? I say if there are ten of those people, all ten of them are doomed to fail." "Who said the communist party doesn't allow freedom of speech?" Li also quoted Mao saying that the only path for communism is destruction because as the country reaches true socialism, there is no more need for guidence by a political faction.

Indeed, if both Mao and Zhou envisioned a China with freedom of speech, then why not give it to the people, starting from the country's best universities? It is so true that Beijing University has only gone backwards since the 1950s, evidenced by the fact that discussions over certain topics are banned, which wasn't the case in 1920s - a prolific era for China's intellectuals and writers.

Mao said: "The Xin Hai Revolution is not yet ended." It is so true as Chinese today are caught up in the crossroads between capitalist free market and Marxism, confused by their relation with the government and growing patriotism.

After listening to Li's speech, I don't think economics alone will guarantee China's stability and sustainability.

you might be right Messrs (scared gal) TwChinese....

.....a BIG NATION must have the INTERNAL STRENGTH to be able to allow its citizen FREE SPEECH while having the social pressure, peer pressure, culture pressure to prevent EXTREMISM or VIOLENCE from finding a foothold....

..but China now is still POOR, many desperate Triad wannabe waiting for the right "strategy or cue" to gain influence by PUBLIC OPINION. The pacifiying GENTRY, the middle class culture and the peer to peer pressure is not STRONG ENOUGH in Mainland China.

Even in Taiwan, i have severe misgiving..given the fist fights that they have had in their HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES...it could be worse in China...we are not ready yet.

The Great CCP leadership will continue to monitor and adjust...it is a matter of time only!

cheerios!

...basically, we should have a cultural, peer to peer, social justice situation that can tolerate wide spectrum of views.

Freedom

More freedom comes from increasing prosperity.

No matter how prosperous a country is, there will always be limited freedom. America and UK included.
