Can the sentence read like this : His reading habits are quite different from those that I know.

If not, why?

In the same vein

should say that 'his reading habits are quite different from ANY OTHERS that i know'. you can't say '.................from 'those that i know' because those that you know include HIS reading habits and then you would be saying that 'HIS reading habits ARE QUITE DIFFERENT from HIS reading habits.'

In the same vein, the following sentence would also be incorrect:
"These are different from those that I know", since "these" would also be part  of "those" that I know!
