查找了一下过去的贴子,关于“插队”的译法是类似这样的:
live in countryside and worked with peasants
但我要用的不能是这样长,有没有短一些的表达方法呢?我的句子是:

那是我插队的地方。

应该怎么翻译成英文好呢?谁能帮帮忙?谢谢了!

又:与此相关的,还有“洋插队”,应该怎么译呢?

Not always accurate, but usually closer to truth, given the context ...

那是我插队的地方。
That's the village where I was exiled.

“洋插队”的中国学生  the "self-exiled" Chinese scholars overseas

插队即是指“上山下乡”。“我插队的地方”即为“我上山下乡的地方”。

这种带有十足的中国文化背景(或者干脆说是特定时期的畸形文化特征)的东西,在没有足够上下文情形下,想简化到2-3个单词组成的译文而让老外明白是绝对没有可能的。

    译法实例:
  当时,全国有数百万城市知青插队落户
At that time, millions of the city-bred educated youths across China settled in the countryside and merged into the peasants to farm for a living.

  上山下乡
(of educated urban youth) go and work in the countryside or mountain areas

那是我插队的地方 That's the village where I was sent down/exiled

插队 During the Cultural Revolution millions of people were sent down to the countryside to live and work with the peasants. Tumu's version is pretty good. I also like the phrase "sent down" for 插队 for a number of reasons:
1. It can be understood by foreigners. In sports if a young player needs more training the team will send him down to the farm team, and he is said to have been "sent down" to the farm.
2. "Sent down" also means sentenced. For example, so and so is sent down for 2 years, meaning he has been given a 2 year sentence. This aptly describes the situation and feeling of the young people at the time.
3. The success of the movie <Xiu Xiu: The Sent Down Girl> makes this phrase and its meaning well known.

Even though literally sent down means 下放, the actual meaning is still the same as 插队.

洋插队 Sent down/exiled across the pond? Sent down to foreign land?
