two scenarios where one can say "书到用时方恨少!"

i've heard this many times and i can classify them into two categories. one is when a boy asks his father why to buy more books as he sees there is a great lot of books in his father's study room. and he would hear his father citing this idiom to explain to him that a scholar will never feel he has had enough books to consult and make reference to when he is at work.

the other scenario is with someone expressing his regret: he should have worked harder and learned more so that he would be able to handle the work at hand more easily and to make it better.

-knowledge is always less when you want to use (hupotan)
-learn less today, regret more tomorrow (coolmax)

while the first expression fits in both scenarios (a scholar never complains for possessing too many reference books), the second expression is better used with the second scenario (regret for having wasted time and not learned enough in the past).
