Disposable facemasks are very bad for the environment. Since wearing facemaks in public became law, there has been a marked increase in facemask littering all over China; they can be seen strewn all over the streets, clogging up drains etc! And what's even worse, they are not biodegradable which means they remain in the environment for ages! Few people are using the special bins provided in shopping centers for disposing used facemasks. It is time the authorities encourage the use of re-usable facemasks for the sake of our environment!
Re-usable facemasks are cheaper in the long run; a pair of them can last a long time. Wash the soiled one in disinfectant, hang out to dry, meanwhile use the other one. Keep recycling between the two. Don't have to buy a pack of disposables which costs much more these days compared with before Coronavirus struck!
Surprisingly, my concern is corroborated by a news item on CGTN highlighting te problem of facemask littering. Many environmentalists and even some governments are very concerned too. An environmentalist picked up dozens of facemaks along a short stretch of a Hong ong beach, and divers recovered more in the ocean. These are no biodegradable; marine creatures die from swallowing them. The French Govt has passed a law making it an offence with heavy penalties for littering with facemasks. China has been quite successful in stopping the spread of the covid 19, hopefully it will pay some attention to stopping the spread of littering with facemasks!
