In the balance of things, it could have been less draconian, and perhaps with a more effective response:|
1. recognize that the real problem is anger-management; this usually increases as societies open up but people have yet to realize their trying to accommodate changes will in turn affect how they may behave;
2. putting her into jail will mean the lesson she learns gets lost; society should be reminded of it by not putting her into jail but making her do community service instead, with the media covering what she is doing, say every three months, for a year. Like washing the bus, delivering meals to the driver, bowing in apology to his family, and so on. Then the whole of society will see her returning to courtesy, humanity and concern for others, virtues which are too often sacrificed in the madcap race to succeed.
3. the bus company should have a proper customer service program. Like displaying in each bus the words "if you have a complaint about fee collected, cleanliness, staff/customer behavior, call this number and we shall attend to it - Immediately - and come back to you by 0800 hours tomorrow. If we don't, please report us to the press". (or something like that)
If she is put in jail, the lesson is lost because people will forget, her presence is deprived from her family, her future employment is jeopardized, and she may come out angrier than before, this time at the whole society and not just the driver.
Which is no solution for the essence of the matter - anger management.
Is there a good point to what she did? Maybe she couldn't tolerate more than others the shortchange of even 1 yuan. For those who purloin millions, think of that too.
