2nd hand books are dirty; you can never tell where they have been!  People read them in the toilets, throw them on toilet floors, then they end up in 2nd hand book shops; I won't touch them!

i don't know where you think second hand books are sourced from.
Most are ex-library books, or from private collections (large houses).
many can be first editions, academic books.

any that are in poor condition are not sold on, but scrapped.

e-books require energy to power them.

Thats what you think, I've seen many secondhand books, dirty and badly stained, on sale in secondhand bookshops!  Whereas secondhand clothes can be washed, secondhand books can't;  therein lies the risk of disease transmission!

i don't know what sort of second hand book shops you frequent, but where i am there is a minimum standard of condition, below which the books are not deemed acceptable for sale.

as i said, most second hand books are sourced from libraries and private collections (especially the more rare, old and valuable historic books)
newer second hand books may only have been read once or twice, or remaindered from old stock.
I don't know where you get the impression that second hand books are dirty/diseased - i am sure my late grandfather would love to hear that you would consider his books as such.

to be honest, you are more likely to pick up an unwanted disease from using public transport than a clean second hand book, as many people don't wash their hands prior to holding on.
