The Trump Administration wants Europe to increase their defense spending so they can buy US-made weapons and pay for the costs of hosting US military bases plus a “protection” fee of 50% while opposing NATO member Turkey from buying the Russian-made S-400 MDS. Trump’s unilateral decision to withdraw the USA from the INF treaty could potentially turn Europe into a nuclear battlefield again which the INF treaty sought to prevent. That was the original intent of both Reagan and Gorbachev when they signed the INF treaty banning Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces with a range of 500 to 5,500 kms which puts the whole of Europe — from Latvia to Ireland — within range of nuclear missiles.

Bad news. Especially for Europe.

So where are the Europeans marching in the streets in mass protests against this act of betrayal against Europe by the USA?

It's true that some Americans are unrealistic about Russia. So are the former Warsaw Pact countries. As for maintaining hostilities in order to sell weapons, this may be true of the owners and managers of some arms companies. Both the US and the EU failed to bring Russia into the West when the USSR ended. This was a MAJOR FAILURE. Instead, Russia was humiliated and threatened. This led to the rise of reactive Russian nationalism which Putin's corrupt government uses to stay in power. The West has made a mess of the Russian problem.
My problem is simple: I just know better than everyone-else!

I agree with you that Putin is reviving Russian Nationalism as a reaction against NATO’s expansion into the former Warsaw Pact countries in Eastern Europe. The Russians are quite bitter about this because Reagan promised Gorbachev that NATO would not expand eastward. Instead, NATO dismembered Yugoslavia and expanded all the way to the Baltic States.
But you miss my point about US Imperialism and its malevolent designs for Europe.

Ukraine is a good example of how the USA destabilized the country by promoting the anti-Russian Nationalists in Western Ukraine against the ethnic Russians and Russian speakers in Eastern Ukraine. After the USA backed the political coup in Kiev, Putin had to act to protect Russian interests in Crimea.

The same thing happened in Syria when the USA backed the anti-Assad rebels and is now repeating itself in Venezuela with the USA backing a political coup against Maduro.

What puzzles me is why Europeans don’t get “it”. US imperialism is never benevolent but always malevolent. The entire world knows it, except Europeans. For example, Poland not only invited the US military but also wants US missiles to be used against Russia!!!

In actuality, the demise of the Soviet Union is a bane to the US, who always wants to bestride Europe regarding defense and economy. Without hyping up Russia threat to play on people's fear, NATO would have long been disbanded as a redundant entity...

I agree with you that the demise of the Soviet Union allowed the USA to dominate Europe militarily. But there is a cost to NATO’s expansion which is borne almost entirely by the USA. This is what Trump has been complaining about all these years: that Europeans have been piggy-backing on the US military without the USA getting anything in return. In financial terms, the USA is losing money from NATO because it’s Germany — not the USA — who is the industrial powerhouse dominating the economic life of European nations — inside and outside of the EU — all the way to Russia.

So who benefits from US military support of NATO? Simple. The US Military-Industrial Complex and their agents such as Pompeo and Bolton who’s advising Trump on NATO.

The day NATO dies is the day the USA Empire will cease to exist.
