In my eyes, the big differences between Chinese Lunar New Year and western Christmas consist in the following facts: the former is pragmatic and practical while the later is spiritual and religious. As we know, Chinese Lunar New Year is also called GuoNian过年,and the eve of the Lunar New Year Day is called Chu Xi 除夕。 The legend has it that Xi 夕 is an evil monstor who will do a hateful harm to people while Nian 年 is a powerful hero who helps people get rid of Xi on the eve of the lunar new year.

The difference is obvious.

Chinese New Year can be celebrated anywhere by anyone who identifies with the Chinese cultural traits of harmony, filial piety, mutual benefit and common prosperity.  It is essentially a secular event devoid of any religious overtones.

Christmas itself is based on a mistaken belief -- Jesus was not born on December 25 in Year O -- and he was no 'God.'

Born to a carpenter in Bethlehem, his experience of having lived in India in the area now known as Kashmir from age 14 to his early thirties learning theology before he brought the knowledge back to his hometown is well-known to people who've studied the history of World Religions.
