The murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in a year when more than half of all journalists killed were targeted deliberately shows hatred towards the media in many areas of society, according to an annual report released by a press freedom group on Tuesday.

At least 63 professional journalists around the world were killed doing their jobs in 2018, Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said, a 15 percent increase on last year. The number of fatalities rises to 80 when it includes media workers and citizen journalists.

"The hatred of journalists that is voiced ... by unscrupulous politicians, religious leaders and businessmen has tragic consequences on the ground, and has been reflected in this disturbing increase in violations against journalists,” said RSF Secretary-General Christophe Deloire.

Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government and who began writing for the Washington Post after moving to the U.S. last year, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October. His death sparked global outrage.

The Paris-based body said that the three most dangerous countries for journalists to work in were Afghanistan, Syria and Mexico, which respectively saw the death of 15, 11 and nine journalists.

The U.S. was ranked one of the deadliest countries for journalists in 2018 for the first time, as it ranked sixth just behind Yemen (fourth) and India (fifth).

In 2018, six journalists were killed in the U.S.

According to the report, there are another 348 journalists currently in prisons, while the number was 326 in 2017, and 60 are being held hostage.

The report shows that murders, imprisonment, hostage-taking and enforced disappearances have all increased, meaning the journalists worldwide have never suffered so much violent and abusive treatment as in 2018.

"Violence against journalists has reached unprecedented levels this year, and the situation is now critical," said Deloire.

The death of Journalist Michael Hastings is as dodgy as they come, and the official report on his death is as ridiculously suspect as the report on 911.
The new Mercedes Exploded violently, some say there were 3 explosions, the first one and the biggest was said to have occurred moments before the car hit the tree.
Brand new Mercedes dont explode like this, in fact most or even all cars dont...except in hollywood, the entire car was engulfed in an inferno. the kind of damage you would expect to see after hitting a tree hard enough that the Entire Engine and Transmission ended up nearly 200 ft away...?

When comparing deaths or other violence against journalists between USA and China, there is more behind the numbers.

That is, in USA the number of people identifying themselves as journalists is much bigger than in China, even if ignoring the different size of population - for obvious reasons.

In China there is barely any investigative or critical journalism allowed, while in west even many freelance bloggers could be considered journalists. At least when comparing to some "journalists" in China.

While China seems to gloat on robots being able to do reporters' work, journalists in USA and elsewhere go under the fire to find and investigate stories.

But that's not the primary difference. As I said, the sole number of people working in journalism and media in general is so much bigger in USA, and these professions are no more safe from general violence in the society than any other professions.

And that violence in general is more frequent in USA than in China. It does not have much to do with journalism per se.

You can get mugged or caught in crossfire between drug dealers just as well while reporting a cafe opening, as you can as a waitress, or a doctor, or a teacher having a coffee or working in the same place.

Of course on top of that you have some violence that specifically targets journalists, that OP refers to. But such violence may as well target lawyers, teachers, doctors, or waitresses, each for their own reasons. So it really comes down to no difference at all.

Of course, if we consider that in western democracies media serves as some kind of watchdog for the politicians and others, then one could argue that they are somehow more important to be kept safe. But same could be said about doctors, teachers, or anyone else - maybe not lawyers.

Besides, it is so much easier to hit reporters for revenge, when they are not locked away as they would be in China.
