They have miscalculated; China will never allow them to go independent, that is China's 'core interest' which not even a great power USA can trample upon!  The Taiwanese would pay a very heavy price of they take the wong step!

Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen resigned as Democratic Progress Party chair!
Presence of Tsai Ing-wen not only destroyed DPP but her own credibility!
Taiwanese must wake up to realize that they are part of mainland China.
No luxury like that of US to splash and waste, while borrowing from the world and need not pay!

K Rudd is a Mandarin speaking Aussie with a lot of bias against China; beware his sweet tongue; he looks China-friendly but behind the back he called for friendly nations to oppose China!  Double-headed snake  that he is!

Indeed, what you say is well known...

  However, my mentioning of K.Rudd was not meant as a good or bad example;
rather to to show that leaders in DEMOCRATIC Countries are dismissed as easily as a street sleeper in India.

Where is that courage?
  Taiwan was under Japanese rule between 1895 and 1945...

   Korea was under Japanese colonial rule from 1910-1945 and it was a deeply ambivalent experience for Koreans.  Japanese colonialism was very harsh...
   Koreans were forced to work in Japanese factories and were sent as soldiers to the front. Tens of thousands of young Korean women were drafted as “Comfort Women” or sexual slaves - for Japanese soldiers...
   In 1939, Koreans were even pressured by the colonial authorities to change their names to Japanese names, and more than 80 percent of the Koreans complied with the name-change ordinance.

South Korea got courage..

  South Korea said Wednesday it will dissolve a foundation funded by Japan to compensate South Korean women who were forced to work in Japan’s World War II military brothels. The widely expected decision, if carried out, would effectively kill a controversial 2015 agreement to settle a decades-long impasse over the sexual slavery issue and threatens to aggravate a bitter diplomatic feud between the Asian U.S. allies over history.
