China reiterated its position that it firmly opposes any form of official exchange and military contact between the US and Taiwan, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said at a news briefing on Wednesday.

Those who undermine the peace of the Taiwan Strait with foreign forces will face the consequence, Ma noted.

He made the remarks in response to the sailing of two US Navy warships through the Taiwan Strait on October 22.

Before the announcement, Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Chinese National Defense Ministry, also stressed that China's stance on Taiwan remains unchanged, and China hopes the US would enhance strategic communication with China and promote strategic mutual trust to steer the China-US relationship onto the right track.

Exactly right, any more than the US would allow China to engage California in direct contacts about military cooperation in that state. Taiwan IS a part of China.

I agree. Time for USA to stop annoying China. Taiwan can negotiate a very good deal with even more autonomy than Hong Kong. A satisfied China will be a peaceful China.
My problem is simple: I just know better than everyone-else!

What does "firmly oppose" mean in this context?

Had there been any time in the past that China had not "firmly" opposed official and military contact?

You mean there had been times that China "softly" opposed such contact?

Mao said, "Not to grasp firmly is the same as not grasping."

We can extrapolate the above "firmly oppose" case to say that "not to oppose firmly is the same as not oppose.

So using this line of logic there had been times in the past that China had "softly" opposed official and military contact.

That means it had not opposed such contact in the past.

Which of course is nonsense because that had never been the case under any Chinese leadership.

So the present repetition of "firmly oppose" is useless because that would simply tell Trump that China can be molested with impunity, and that the PLA is not going to do anything despite statements made by Chinese diplomats specifically stating that if the Americans let their naval vessels park at Gaoxiong Harbor in Taiwan, that would provoke a PLA response.

My suggestion is not to say anything and just let them park those ships there this time because we are apparently not ready, or else we'd just be embarrassing ourselves.

When we are really ready to take action no warning needs to be given and just start shooting like Turkey's Erdogan did with that Russian jet.
