I have been to a few, but what makes a good one?

In some I have been to, we read aloud and discuss an article written in English, or perhaps watch an English movie. If there is a foreigner there, maybe we chat to him or her. What other ideas or comments do you have about what we should (or should not) be doing at an English Corner?

About “ maybe we chat to him or her.”
---------- maybe we chat ‘with’ him or her.!!!
Chatting is interaction activity which must be done by at least two persons. For this reason ‘with’ is better than ‘to’

At an English Corner, don't sit silent or wait to speak English only to a foreigner.
Make an effort to speak English even if there are only Chinese in the group you are in.

English corner is not the place to improve your English; 90% of those attending are Chinese, and they either speak Chinese among themselves or try to speak some kind of English, often called 'Chinglish'!  It's like the blind leading the blind!!

Make an effort  ...

That's exactly what the Chinese do all the time, surround the lone foreigner while ignoring their compatriots.
"Make an effort to speak English even if there are only Chinese in the group you are in."
Not a very sound advice if you consider the fact that the Chinese speak Chinglish,  not standard English, so when they speak to each other, they reinforce their Chinglish!

Do you attend English Corners with a view of dating members of the opposite gender?

Only a crooked mind thinks of that!  Most, if not all attendees, want to improve their English!
