Pretty much, it is in my opinion simple - instead of treating it as one big problem, you treat it as several smaller problems. For example, instead of going from non-AI to AI, we can try linking a machine to a biological neural-network. This has already been done. From the BBC.  "Sci/Tech Biological computer born"

A computer made of neurons taken from leeches has been created by US scientists.

At the moment, the device can perform simple sums - the team calls the novel calculator the "leech-ulator".

Another possible means of helping to find a solution is by putting aspects of the problem online as a puzzle. From the University of Washington Article: "Gamers succeed where scientists fail"
Gamers have solved the structure of a retrovirus enzyme whose configuration had stumped scientists for more than a decade. The gamers achieved their discovery by playing Foldit, an online game that allows players to collaborate and compete in predicting the structure of protein molecules.

And yet, another solution is to simply link up several smaller AIs into a single larger one. The principle is thus - we are not trying to solve one big problem, so much as break it down into a smaller problem. Or not to seek a solution, so much as a meta-solution.
