An advertisement on online commerce platform Taobao has been criticized for promoting gender discrimination, reports thepaper.cn.

The advertisement on China's leading e-commerce platform shows an expectant mother with the tag line, "What can you do if you're pregnant with a girl?" The product is called Jianyunbao, an alkaline food product promoted as a treatment that helps pregnant women bear a son instead of a daughter by adjusting the body's pH value.

A screenshot of the advertisement has been shared widely online, drawing heavy criticism from people who say the advertisement is sexist because it implies that daughters are inferior to sons.

An article published on Friday in the online journal of the Women's Federation of Jiangsu Province urged the company to apologize. That day, Alibaba's online advertising subsidiary Alimama issued an apology. The company says it has removed the advertisement from its platforms and issued a penalty against the company involved.

In June last year, an ad for Jianyunbao appeared on Taobao's home page with the line, "Finally I fulfilled my wish to have a son to carry on the family line." In response, the All-China Women's Federation published an article online in its China Women's News journal saying it's ridiculous to claim eating alkaline food can affect the sex of a baby.

Medical experts have noted that eating certain foods normally cannot change the body's pH level, and that acid in the stomach is a natural part of the digestive process. The body's pH level usually only changes in response to severe medical conditions.
