"I see lots of people carrying their own bags or else rolling a
small suitcase behind them."

I've seen quite a few "students" rolling those small suitcases who range in age from 40 to 80.
If capitalism promotes innovation and creativity then why aren't scientists and artists the richest people in a capitalist nation?

Your observations are spot on. The exact same problem was observed in developed Hong Kong ca. tw ...

You really ought to visit China someday.
On practically every street corner there is a dual trash bin. One for recyclables and one for other trash.
The poor often raid the recycle bins and carry that trash off.
Do they like to take them home and balance them on their toes or could it be they take them to
a recycle center and cash them in for money.
The little monkey seneca would probably try to balance plastic bottles on its toes while eating a piece
of banana it found in the regular trash bin.
If capitalism promotes innovation and creativity then why aren't scientists and artists the richest people in a capitalist nation?

banning supermarkets and shops from handing out free plastic bags to customers on June 1, 2008,

One of the problems with China is, that Beijing government makes laws and regulations that look good on paper, but they barely get implemented.

It is now 2018, 10 years after that supposed ban, and when I go buy a can or two of random drink from downstairs kiosk, they automatically want to put it in plastic bag. Same for a single banana or apple from fruit store - assuming they aren't already wrapped in plastic foil.

And I hear this from many others - you really have to demand the staff to not package your groceries to plastic.

Situation is somewhat better in larger chains like Metro or Walmart, but in these places it is also common to see individual fruits or vegetables on the shelves wrapped in plastic.

I understand that for Chinese consumers the plastic wrapping indicates higher quality. Awareness among consumers needs to improve. I haven't seen any TV commercials or web ads to that end, least not here in remote provinces.
