Do you have an interest in World War II and in Nazi concentration camp movies? If you do, here is a list of ten Nazi concentration camp movies that are worth watching.
"Schindler’s List" (1993) Based on a true story, this tale of human transformation watches Oskar Schindler turn from a greedy German businessman to someone who turns his factory into a safe haven for Jews. According to accounts, Schindler’s efforts saved as many as 1,100 Jews from being gassed to death.
"Sophie’s Choice" (1982) This movie stars Meryl Strepe, in one of her best performances, as a woman who has survived the Holocaust and found love, only to have it ruined by the ghosts of her past.
"The Counterfeiters" (2007) The Counterfeiters is a true story about the greatest counterfeiting operation in history that was set up by the Nazis during WW II to destabilize British currency. The Nazis employed Jews and other undesirables who were spared death only by their unique talents in being able to aid in the counterfeiting scheme. The film’s protagonist has to juggle keeping his Nazi employers happy, sabotaging the whole scheme, and looking out for his fellow counterfeiter’s lives. It’s a gripping tale.
"The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" (2008) The horrors of a Nazi concentration camp are seen through the eyes of two boys. One is the camp’s German commandant and the other is a Jewish prisoner.
"Jakob the Liar" (1999) Starring Robin Williams as Jakob, this movie tells the tale of a man who overhears a forbidden German radio report about Russian advances in the war. Banished back to the Polish ghetto, Jakob decides to tell fabricated news bulletins about Nazi losses during the war to keep optimism and humor alive among his fellow ghetto residents.
"The Devil’s Arithmetic" (1999) Kirsten Dunst stars as a modern day teenage girl who doesn’t have much interest in her family’s Jewish background. She is magically transported back to a Nazi death camp in 1940’s Poland and learns firsthand what the Holocaust was all about.
"Conspiracy" (2001) This movie tells the story, in chilling detail, of the Wannsee Conference, which is a secret meeting in the Berlin suburb of Wannsee in January, 1942, where methods to implement Hitler’s Final Solution to eradicate all Jews from Europe are discussed among high-ranking Nazis.
"Holocaust" (1978) This TV miniseries tells the story of the fictional Weiss family in Germany, and describes, on an individual basis, how they dealt with the changing anti-Semitic conditions in Germany during that period and their suffering until the war ended.
"Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961) This classic was one of the first films to tackle the subject of the Holocaust after the end of the war. It’s a fictionalized version of the Nazi war crimes trials that took place in Nuremberg, Germany in 1945-1946. An all-star cast giving great performances makes this a must-see.
"Escape From Sobibor" (1987) This film documents the true story of the mass escape of prisoners from the Sobibor death camp in 1943. About 300 of the 600 inmates escaped, but most were later caught or killed. However, the escape led to the closing of the death camp by the Nazis. It’s a gripping tale with lots of action.
