He carn't sue for being removed there is a law protecting the airline industry

Yeah, could be that there is law that will make him lose in court, but sue he still can. The process would bring negative attention to the company, and that attention would force United to settle it out of court room.

Therefore suing could serve a purpose even when law is not on your side.

Incorrect.  Under the Warsaw convention which governs air travel a ticket only guarantees that a passenger will be transported to a specified destination, it doesn't state when and "bumping pax" (the practice of making passengers fly on another flight) is widespread as many airlines overbook by 30% to account for the no-shows.  

In this case the bad publicity will result in a decent sized settlement plus as the security guys were very rough there may be other potential liabilities.

He should have just obliged
if you want something in life get off your backside, and do it yourself!! don't rely on others to do it for you

They can ask you to leave the flight yes, but the passenger suffered a cut during the episode, so he will  now likely sue
