If the U.S. military could "take out" North Korea, they would have done so a long time ago.
Saddam didn't have nukes nor the backing of a nuclear-armed military superpower. Neither did Qadaffi.
And that's why they're gone now.
But North Korea has nukes and the backing of not just one but TWO nuclear-armed military superpowers.
And that's why they're still here.
Because the U.S. military knows very well the power of nukes to "shock and awe".

Well... I don't know if we can quite put it that way for Russia. Russians are sneaky bas'tards. They play all sides of the political spectrum. I.e, India against China and then Vietnam against China by arming all three. You see, allies don't arm the enemy of another ally to the teeth but Russia did just that to China and yet, we Chinese shamefully consIder Russia an ally.

In the sinking of the Cheonan when the atmosphere in the Korean peninsula was red hot and Seoul threaten to go after Pyongyang for the deed, or no deed, with the Americans cheering them from behind, it was Wen Jiabao (or the Chinese presence) which took center stage and which defused the then red hot Korean powder keg.

Dmitry Medvedev who was Russia's then interim president was never heard from thoughout the event..

Putin's a killer. This was the claim made by Fox News journalist; Bill O'Reilly during his recent interview with Donald Trump. Trump's reply came in the form of a simple question. What, you think our country's so innocent?

" backing of not just one but TWO nuclear-armed military superpowers."

Both India and Vietnam are allies of Russia. And so is North Korea. If anything, any war starting in the Korean Peninsula will involve not just the USA but also Japan, Russia and China. That's the geopolitics of East Asia.

Just because China considers Russia an ally doesn't mean that China can't deal with the West which has imposed sanctions on Russia. Similarly, just because Russia considers China an ally doesn't mean that Russia can't deal with India and Vietnam, both of whom tend to view China as a rival.

All I am saying is that any war in East Asia will pit the USA and its non-nuclear-armed puppy dogs against THREE(3) nuclear-armed wolves -- one small wolf (North Korea) backed by two big wolves (China and Russia) -- which makes East Asia the most dangerous region in the world. In the Middle East, the USA is fighting against cockroaches. And so is Russia.

The OP's thesis that war in East Asia will be like the Iraq War is gross understatement; as war rages on in the Eastern Front involving the USA, NATO will have to invoke Article 5 to attack Russia on the Western Front. That's the beginning of WWIII.

Russia will continue into the future as the great empire she was no question about it. However, her heydays in terms of the former Soviet Union is definitely over.
* Serbia was under attack by NATO, Moscow hid on the sideline
* Saddam's Republic of Iraq was met with a massive storm from the desert, Moscow just sit and watched
* Libya stumbled and fell, Moscow was missing throughout the accident, and...

"insult to injury, I bet soon as Trump seals the deal with Moscow and soon as the aftershock in Washington subsides, like Milosvic, like Saddam, and like Quadaffi, al'Assad's head, too, will be placed on the chopping block by NATO and Moscow will be remaining mute about it"

I bet also that based on the above events that Pyonyang is watching Russia with keen and watchful eyes and I bet also that, after witnessing what had happened to tge above that Pyongyang have to have reservations about Moscow dependence as a true and reliable ally and that leaves Pyongyang only one option, China. As a card she knows she can use in times of disparity.

Again, allies don't sell allies out. By arming India, and Vietnam, what Moscow is saying, essentually, is that we (China) is not an ally.

End of story....

The Middle East is completely different from Eastern Europe where NATO has been expanding its presence all the way to the Russian border. The NATO threat is what pushed Putin to annex Crimea where Russia maintains a naval base in Sebastopol and to support the Eastern Ukrainian rebels against the Western-backed Kiev regime. In Syria, Putin wants to maintain Russia's only naval base with access to the Mediterranean Sea in the port of Tartus. If Assad goes, so will Tartus. Putin won't allow that to happen. The joint Russian and Iranian military intervention in the Syrian Civil War has effectively killed the Syrian rebellion except for the Kurds in Northern Syria and ISIS in Raqqa where the US military maintains a small presence. The West has already given up on backing the Syrian rebellion against Assad. That's why the West now wants the Kurds to finish off the ISIS cockroaches in Raqqa who feed off the chaos in the Middle East. The most likely scenario in the future is a Syria partioned into a pro-Western Northern Syria controlled by the Kurds and a pro-Russian Southern Syria controlled by Assad.
